Dual phones: Your queries answered

Got a burning question about these phones that work twice as hard? THAM YUEN-C has the answers

How are dual-SIM phones different from those that hold two SIM cards?
Dual-SIM phones are also known as dual-standby phones because they allow both SIM cards to be 'live' at the same time.
These phones have two SIM card slots in the back cover, both of which link to an antenna.
There are phones which hold two SIM cards, but can use only one card at a time. For these phones, users will choose which SIM card they want live when they turn on their phones. They will also not receive calls or text messages for the SIM card that is not live until they switch to use that SIM card.

Can I choose which line I want to use for making calls or sending text messages with dual-SIM phones?
Yes. Some of these phones depend on software that allows users to choose from their phone menu which line they want to make a call with, and which one they want to send text messages with.
Others depend on hardware buttons to do this. The Samsung SGH-880 has one button at the side that lets you switch between the SIM cards. Some of the China-made phones sold in Sim Lim Square have two Send buttons, one for each of the SIM cards.

How will I know which line a caller is calling me on?
When calls come in, the phone displays which line it is for. For text messages, a little icon beside the messages indicate whether it was sent to SIM card 1 or SIM card 2.

What about my contact lists?
All the phone numbers will displayed in the contact list. But next to each contact will be an icon indicating which SIM card the phone number is saved in.

What happens when I'm on the phone and a call comes in for the other line?
Although these phones allow both lines to be live at the same time, when one line is in use, callers who call the other line will hear an engaged tone.
Call waiting will still be available for the individual lines you have, but not between the two lines.
